Our students are involved in gardening and cooking to learn about fresh seasonal produce, healthy productive garden ecosystems and the importance of local produce.
The kitchen garden program provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to put into practice reading, writing, numeracy, and science skills in each session. The kitchen is a fantastic place for students to shine in hands-on practical learning situations.
Our students work together to sow, grow, and harvest food in our organic vegetable garden. We harvest the produce from the garden and use it to prepare wonderful food experiences. Together we share the food and foster a love of fresh seasonal food, great gardening and nourish our bodies with fresh healthy produce.
At BWCS we present a holistic approach to the study of Environment and Sustainability. We integrate education, environmental, social, and economic outcomes so enabling students to appreciate each area as one component of the full picture of sustainability. We tackle the areas of biodiversity, energy, waste, water, and recycling as life skills and encourage students to significantly reduce their use of resources.
Students are encouraged and involved in the maintenance of our gardens. The importance of animal life is studied. Students are involved in the planning, planting and maintenance of plants. Animal by-products are put to effective use to help grow our gardens. Eggs are collected and used in our kitchen. Our students know where our food comes from.
Students are involved in waste management. Leftover food is collected and fed to our chickens. BWCS is a ‘Nude Food’ school. If packaging is brought to school, students must take it home with them. We hope this encourages less waste at school as well as home. Students are aware of the undesirable effects of litter on the environment. Our tanks collect fresh water: students are aware of water conservation.
